The 4-4-0 American-class steamer was the most common locomotive in America during the late 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. It was manufactured in large numbers and is credited with connecting the eastern and western United States. This class of locomotive handled both freight and passenger trains and it?s use was so universal that it became known as the ?American Standard? or simply ?American?.
